More teachers, fewer schools in the UK

A recent report from the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) indicates a significant increase in new teachers coming into the market. TDA reports a 40 percent increase in inquiries about teaching opportunities in the UK, since March of 2008.
More importantly, the number of qualified candidates for teaching math are up 25 percent in the same period. New teachers seem to be older than in the past, indicating intended career changes, particularly those made redundant from financial firms in London.
As stated by TDA’s CEO, Graham Holley: “In my experience the level of interest in teaching is completely unprecedented. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Meanwhile, small private schools appear to be closing at an alarming rate. At least six independent schools have announced their closure this year, during the past 6 months. More bad news is expected this summer, as many parents are no longer able to pay their school fees.
This development mirrors what is happening in US private schools and colleges, where many institutions are increasing scholarship aid to enable students to stay enrolled.
