In this special episode of the Voice of TIE, Stacy Stephens welcomes Bambi Betts, a cornerstone figure in international education, the founder and Director of the Principals' Training Center (PTC), and the President of the Overseas Schools Assistance Corporation (TIE and the PTC’s non profit parent company) to celebrate the 40th anniversary of The International Educator (TIE).
Before the internet, international educators largely relied on recruiting fairs to find jobs abroad, with no centralized way to learn which positions were available at schools around the world. To address that gap, Forrest Broman founded TIE. What began as a newspaper of classified job advertisements delivered by mail has grown into a dedicated resource for the international education community, connecting educators and schools while sharing news, ideas, and practical resources specific to the international education community.
Bambi Betts reflects on TIE's humble origins, its growth alongside the PTC, and the sweeping technological changes that have reshaped how the organization serves its community.
As TIE marks 40 years, Bambi considers what must endure and what must continue to change to meet the needs of international educators. At its core, TIE’s purpose remains clear: strengthening the profession by connecting educators, amplifying their experiences, and advancing the quality of teaching and learning for children worldwide.
