From Nairobi to the Muroni

Students and Staff from the International School of Kenya Head for the Remote North West on their Intercultural Trip
Community service and cultural interaction took center stage on the International School of Kenya’s (ISK) recent Intercultural Trip to Marich, in the West Pokot region of Kenya. A group of 20 students, three teachers, two drivers and one very resourceful fundi made their way to the Marich Field Study Center, situated on the banks of the Muroni River.
Once at camp the students met up with Harmon Parker, who heads up Bridging the Gap Africa, and who was recently recognized as a Top 10 qualifier for CNN’s “Hero of the Year” award.
The plan for the three days (after accounting for travel time) was simple: the group was going to build a bridge, build a playground, donate half a ton of food, donate over 60 books to a local school, learn about the local culture, climb Mt. Ko, visit the Turkwell dam, visit the Saiwa Swamp National park, visit a traditional Pokot market, and have nightly lectures from their fellow classmates. And leave some time to have a little fun.
The bridge was built and we all attended an amazing opening ceremony with the local District Commissioner, chiefs, and the entire Tamkal community. This included 500 schoolchildren, and many of the men and women will use this bridge to get to and from school, church, markets, and medical clinics.
The playground was assembled and installed with a secure foundation, bringing joy to the local primary school children at Marich. Food and books were delivered to, and much appreciated by, the boarding school in Turkwell.
Besides all this, ISK students got the opportunity to explore an extremely remote and beautiful part of Kenya, a region very seldom visited by anyone, never mind international school students!
