The 100th Day in Libreville, Gabon

Last February the American International School of Libreville (AISL), Gabon celebrated it 100th day of school; as in many schools around the world, the 100th day is a benchmark filled with fun activities and inspirational projects.
As educators we are on a constant mission to make our students not only proficient in academics but also contributing members of society. It is our ongoing mission at AISL to become an integral part of the Gabonese community. During the weeks prior to our celebration we asked that each child donate two items to our adopted orphanage, the “Hope House.” But as the days passed the enthusiasm exploded into a school-wide mission! Bags of rice and cans of food started to multiply in our donation box, followed by toys and shoes.
In keeping with our mission, the Hope House children were invited to attend our 100th day celebration, share our picnic lunch, and receive all the items from our donation to take back with them. With great exuberance we also welcomed the American Embassy and Ambassador Bejaminson; and as the children of Hope House arrived it, was clear that this 100th day would be unlike any other.
In all my years of teaching and being involved in education, I have never felt so much pride for a group of children. AISL’s students understood the predicament that the children from Hope House were in, and understood that life in West Africa is not always easy. Teaching to the “whole child” is not just rhetoric.

It's great to hear that wonderful things are happening around the world. There is truly nothing better than showing your love to people in need.

P.S. Mr. Van, you used to be my first grade teacher back in 2000-2001 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. It was great reading something by you. Try visiting Graded School sometime. We all truly miss you.

There is nothing as good as showing love to the less priviledge as it makes them not to feel rejected and inculcating the act of helping the needy into the lifes of our younger generation is a very big investment. Thanks to u all
