Throughout the international school community, there is widespread agreement that connecting students to global experiences is essential. At the American School of Tangier (AST) in northern Morocco, recent international programs have spread across campus like wildfire, offering students many opportunities beyond the traditional learning experience.
In just 18 months, AST has initiated exchange programs with schools in the USA as well as Sweden. Other programs with schools in Israel, China, and elsewhere in Morocco will added this year.
AST has taken a slightly different path in developing students’ international foci: we currently also host programs with Dartmouth College, Vanderbilt University, and the U.S. Strategic Languages Program, based at the University of Arizona. College students live in on-campus dorms here, and learn Arabic, participate in social services, and interact with our students. To us, there is no better way to promote global learning than to expose our students to these highly motivated college and university undergraduates.
There is now nearly universal agreement among enrolled families that these international learning and exchange opportunities, which are rare in Morocco, are incredibly important and should be developed.
AST is becoming a beacon of globalized learning for the region, and a model for Northern Morocco’s emerging educational system. There have been challenges, but as the smoke clears, the school’s global focus is now seen as an important step in helping our students prosper on the international stage.
