Recently the American International School of Libreville (AISL), Gabon participated in Hike4Hunger, a worldwide initiative to bring awareness to world hunger. In 2009, “Hike4Hunger” consisted of six hikes in four countries and was able to raise US$87,000 in aid for countries in need of assistance. This year, there were 21 hikes in 12 countries. There were over 800 participants, and together they were able to raise over US$115,000 in much-needed aid.
With Dwayne Lehman, AISL’s Director, spearheading the event, the American International School of Libreville was awarded first place in the “School Award” by Hike4Hunger for its participation and overall school initiative in bringing awareness to this issue.
The “School Award” which was sponsored by World First, consists of a cash prize and worldwide recognition for engaging its youth communities to creating their own hikes and to raise awareness of, and learn about, this global issue.
The event started off with an all-school assembly, where parents and local media were introduced to the Hike4Hunger initiative and where class presentations were made regarding the global issues of hunger.
The Kindergarten class performed a small skit to share their own awareness of the issue, while Grades 1 and 2 sang an uplifting song, “The Rainbow Connection.” At the conclusion of the presentation the whole school sang “I Can Go the Distance,” which they had picked as the school motto for the Hike4Hunger event.
Parents and students, along with the local media, made their way across from the Presidential palace and, with the assistance of the local police, closed the main street of Gabon’s capital city as they marched for hunger. With the sounding of horns and clapping students, teachers and parents made their way down the “Bord de Mer” (waterfront) back towards the school. With American and Gabonese Flags in hand, and signs in both French and English, the American International School of Libreville march brought awareness of global hunger to Gabon, West Africa.
AISL is extremely proud of its students and their dedication to such a worthy cause. We are honored by the recognition, and will continue to encourage awareness of the social issues that affect us all.

Congratulations! Ths story is inspirational and makes me wonder how we can get more schools involved in this kind of philanthropy, the benfits of which can be as great fr the particpants as for the recipients of the money raised. After reading the article, I thought about prizes and wondered what it woould be like for the awards to be television time to promote the cause or the opportunity to address a relevant group, or soome other way to further promote their cause that would otherwise be unaffordable and help the project to quickly expand. Just a thought. But congratulations on such a successful project and thank you for the inspiration.
