To open the door to literacy for children in Pakistan, four Grade 5 classes from the American School of Warsaw (ASW), Poland raised US$2,000 in the short period of two months!
After reading Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson, the fifth graders were enthused to embark on a fundraising journey. They initiated and planned a car wash, a coin trail, a popcorn sale, and a bake sale for the ASW community. They prepared a display and informed ASW students, parents, and teachers about the living and learning conditions of many children in Pakistan.
With great passion and determination, they convinced the community that their “Pennies for Peace” service learning project would enable their peers in Pakistan to receive an education and become an integral part of a country with a literate future.
Students reported that their involvement in the activities had a powerful impact on how they see themselves and others: “Sometimes I do know and feel I am so lucky to be able to have every meal, get new clothes, and go to school. And I’ve discovered my problem: the more I get, the more I want. This book taught me the importance of helping others and thinking about others.”
ASW students discovered that helping others was a very rewarding experience, and that they can be the change they wish to see.

I am so happy to see this report. Greg Mortenson's work is truly inspiring and it is wonderful to see students around the world supporting the children he has championed. With education, there is peace! Thank you to the young students who are helping to make that a reality. More schools need to teach his books!!
