Teacher Appreciation Week Focuses on Teacher Wellbeing at UISG

Students at Utahloy International School Guangzhou (UISG), in Guangzhou, China decided to focus on staff and student wellbeing to create a week of fun and fundraising.

They focused on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal number 3: Good Health and Wellbeing. Here is a brief overview of all activities that took place in the teacher appreciation week.

Monday - Teacher Swap: The IB Diploma Programme students volunteered to teach the secondary students to lighten teacher load and give them a day off at work. They liaised and collaborated with teachers to plan their lessons. Teachers got a break and students got an opportunity to experience a possible career choice: teaching internationally.

Tuesday – Teachers vs Students Dodgeball: Students organized a Dodgeball tournament which was thoroughly enjoyed by all secondary students and teachers. The tournament included students from Grades 7 to 12 competing for the top spot. The student winning team played against the teachers. Teacher and students demonstrated team spirit and collaboration and got rid of stress and anxiety. The purpose was to focus exclusively on physical and mental wellbeing for both teachers and students.

Wednesday - Teacher Talent Show: Teachers performed for students and everyone had a great time as they witnessed the amazing talents of teachers, from miming to juggling to storytelling and dancing, teachers rocked the show. Through this event students raised money for the charities they support and teachers got an opportunity to let their hair down.

Thursday -Teachergram and Teacher Awards: Students sent digital and handwritten appreciation messages for teachers to express their appreciation for all the care and support they receive from teachers. The day ended with the presentation of teacher awards in the assembly. Teachers got the IB learner profile awards but with a pinch of salt. For example, the best communicator award was given to a teacher who can’t stop sharing their holiday stories.

Friday- Teacher Appreciation Lunch: Secondary students organized a healthy and yummy lunch for teachers to express their love and care. The lunch was an opportunity to ensure teachers eat on time and prioritise healthy food, staying away from coffee and muffins.

This student-led initiative managed to fun raise and fundraise all while raising the wellbeing meter at UISG.
