Seoul American MS Student Represents DoDEA in Nat Geo Bee

By Will Griffin
23-May-18

Seoul American Middle School 8th grader Alexander Daniel represented the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) as a finalist in the 2018 National Geographic Bee in Washington, D.C.    Students in grades four through eight are eligible to compete in this challenging test of geographic knowledge, and each year, more than 4 million students from thousands of schools in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Atlantic territories (Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands), Pacific territories (Northern Mariana Islands, Guam and American Samoa) and the Department of Defense Education Activity participate in the Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society.   The contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, to spark student interest in the subject and to increase public awareness about geography. The competition began in 1989 in response to concern about the lack of geographic knowledge among young people in the United States.   The national Bee champion receives a $50,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society, which includes a lifetime subscription to National Geographic magazine, and an all-expenses-paid Lindblad expedition to the Galápagos Islands aboard the National Geographic Endeavour ll. Travel for the trip is provided by Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic. Second- and third-place finishers in the national competition will receive $25,000 and $10,000 college scholarships, respectively.   “We are incredibly proud of Alex, as he not only represents Seoul American Middle School exceptionally well, but all of DoDEA,” said Wanda Bradley, principal of Seoul American Middle School. “To make it to the finals this year is truly indicative of Alex’s commitment to excellence.”   The final round of the Nat Geo Bee, moderated by humorist, journalist and actor, Mo Rocca, will air online at www.natgeobee.org starting at 11:00am on May 24, 2018.   DoDEA plans, directs, coordinates, and manages Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade education programs for school-aged children of Department of Defense personnel who would otherwise not have access to a high-quality public education. DoDEA schools are located in Europe, the Pacific, Western Asia, the Middle East, Cuba, the United States, Guam, and Puerto Rico. DoDEA also provides support and resources to Local Educational Activities throughout the U.S. that serve children of military families.
