The British School Al Khubairat’s (BSAK) Primary School recently presented a check for 121,706 UAE Dirhams to international development charity WaterAid. This substantial donation [roughly US$ 33,000] is the result of a year of fundraising by the primary students at the school.
His Excellency Edward Oakden, British Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, received the check on behalf of the charity. “This is a remarkable achievement by the students, parents and staff at BSAK,” he said. “Having access to clean water and adequate sanitation is a basic human need, and yet one in eight of the world’s population does not have access to this. The work that WaterAid does in some of the poorest countries of the world is extremely important, and I’m delighted that the students at BSAK have made such a wonderful contribution. I’m honored to receive this gift on behalf of WaterAid.”
WaterAid was the chosen charity for BSAK’s Primary School for the 2008/2009 academic year. The final donation was the result of a huge amount of hard work throughout the year, with the children taking part in a myriad of events to raise funds. These included filling bottles with dirham coins, dressing all in blue for ‘Blue Day’, and a sponsored swim event.
Cathy Whiteman, WaterAid’s Community Fundraising Manager, said: “This wonderful donation from BSAK will enable us to work with more of the world’s poorest people, making a real difference to their lives. I thank all the children, parents and staff at BSAK for their hard work; we really appreciate it.”
At least 4,000 children die every day as a result of diseases caused by unclean water and poor sanitation. Over 884 million people in the world do not have access to safe water, roughly one eighth of the world’s population. Some 2.5 billion people in the world do not have access to adequate sanitation, namely almost two fifths of the world’s population.
WaterAid’s mission is to transform lives by improving access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation in the world’s poorest communities; learn more at www.wateraid.org.
