Recruiting Fair Fever

You've made the decision, taken the time off, registered at the fair, bought your ticket, now what?
Going to a recruiting fair for the first time can be a daunting experience to say the least... For some people its the first time they are seeing the international school community in action and that alone can be a little overwhelming.
No fear, take a deep breath and dive in. Here are some things to remember so you can cruise through your time at the fair.
Ask questions: You've come this far, you might as well take advantage of it! Ask other candidates what their experiences have been, what were their challenges, and what are some tips to keep in mind? The participants alone are a wealth of information and will have plenty of tips to help you on your path.
Keep an open mind: Why do some schools have candidates lining up for them and others seem to attract less visitors? Often it's due to the fact that a particular school is in a location that's deemed "desirable." It's good to remember that there are many schools in places that you wouldn't even dream of going. Give these locations open consideration because many have have outstanding schools with very competitive compensation packages. Take advantage of shorter lines and get information on schools outside your comfort zone; you may be surprised!
Armed and Ready: You have found a position at a school you love and now have that long awaited interview. It may be a little different than you are used to. Don't be put off by personal questions and remember to go armed with all your questions ranging from teaching style, school community, culture, and lifestyle. It's okay to be inquisitive -- they know you are committing to more than a job.
Commitment Issues: It's important to know that in this little circle, a verbal commitment is taken seriously. Make sure you ARE sure before letting a school think so.
Coming up Empty: Fair almost at an end and no interesting results? Did you not even find jobs that were in your area of expertise? Fear not -- you now have gained valuable experience along with a wealth of information on schools to take with you. Log on to TIEonline and put that experience to use by searching through the multitude of vacancies posted by hundreds of schools that don't even make it to the fairs. This is still the beginning!
