Introducing... the New Cairo American College Middle School

Cairo American College (CAC) is celebrating its 67th year this year, a testament to our school’s longevity and stability even as we face relatively uncertain times in Egypt.
A highlight of our school year has been the opening of our new middle school building. This purpose-built facility has been two years in the making, and is truly a magnificent addition to the CAC campus.
The new middle school is part of a long-term master plan to rebuild and refurbish our school facilities on the existing site in Maadi, a quiet neighborhood about 12 kilometers south of downtown Cairo. Combined with the opening of a brand-new elementary building two years ago, the new middle school represents the next phase in a school-wide master plan. CAC is committed to providing a world-class learning environment and facilities to its community of learners.
With its block-like structure, the old middle school building was aptly nicknamed the “Motel 6.” Our new building, designed in partnership with our architects at Perkins Eastman, is truly built with middle school students in mind. The features of the four-story building include:
- Twenty-six spacious classrooms, outfitted with the latest educational technology.
- Six science labs, with both classroom space and collaboration/experiment stations.
- Two black box theaters, for our students to pursue studies in drama and theater.
- Two wonderfully lit visual art rooms, for students to develop their artistic talent.
- A state-of-the-art design technology suite that rivals any in schools around the globe.
- An indoor, air-conditioned café with seating for over 70 people.
- And our very own indoor auditorium to hold parent forums, student socials, and other large events.
Another feature of the building is the shared middle school/high school library, which really is world-class. Previously, the shared library was across a field from the old middle school. This year, by virtue of its proximity, middle school students will find access to the library easier and will use that space as they likely never have before. This will help us in our continued commitment towards building a culture of literacy in the middle school.
Finally, the new building offers a phenomenal amount of community space for our students. Our sense of community is a real strength of CAC, and in the new middle school we have a commons area on each floor of the building and some wonderful indoor and outdoor nooks for students to relax in during their breaks and lunches. It has been fun watching the students find their sense of place in the building, and we have enjoyed the newfound luxury of convening grade-level assemblies and large student gatherings.
Of course, a school building is only a building if it is filled with happy, engaged students and caring professionals to guide and nurture them. The building means little without a strong sense of community, and thankfully our middle school is well-grounded in core values of caring, diversity, respect, safety, and trust.
If you happen to visit Cairo, we invite you to come to CAC and pay us a visit. Come see the facility for yourself, if you have not done so already! l

Hello CAC,

I am so happy to see that you have completed the MS project. I lived in Maadi for the 2009-2011 school years and worked at MiSr American College but lived close to your campus so I saw the project at the very beginning.
I am returning this fall to take a position at El Alsson in Giza but will reside in Maadi once more so I will stop by and have a look at your find accomplishment.

To many years of good learning/teaching at CAC!
