In this Pearl, Hokulea shares that embracing imperfection is essential for authentic growth, for ourselves and for the learning communities we lead. She reflects on how, as a non-native English speaker working overseas, she once believed she had to be flawless to prove she belonged, until mentors helped her recognize that “perfection is the enemy of progress.” Now, she understands that “imperfection is not failure, it is growth,” and that true leadership means fostering a culture where mistakes become learning tools, kindness and forgiveness guide our responses, and improvement—not perfection—is the goal for both educators and students.
