For over 30 years international school leaders, teachers, and counselors have come together for PTC professional learning experiences. Each day of every program begins with a “pearl of wisdom,” a “nugget of knowledge,” or a “gem of inspiration” from one of the participants. We are delighted to offer our readers around the world these powerful stories, insights, and strategies, all dedicated to our shared mission of ever more and better learning for our children.
In this Pearl, Jinjie shares insights on the essential but often overlooked aspect of leadership in international schools: self-care. She highlights the paradox that while leaders are expected to support others' wellbeing, they frequently neglect their own. Reflecting on her personal experience balancing multiple demanding roles, Jinjie explains how neglecting her own needs led to a breakdown. She realized, "Effective leadership isn't about doing it all. It's about sustaining yourself so you can serve from a place of strength, clarity, and consistency." Jinjie encourages leaders to pause, reflect on what replenishes their energy, and prioritize self-care in order to lead effectively and sustainably.
