 Keep Making Changes

For over 30 years international school leaders, teachers, and counselors have come together for PTC professional learning experiences. Each day of every program begins with a “pearl of wisdom,” a “nugget of knowledge,” or a “gem of inspiration” from one of the participants. We are delighted to offer our readers around the world these powerful stories, insights, and strategies, all dedicated to our shared mission of ever more and better learning for our children.

In this Pearl, Megan shares the importance of pushing forward with meaningful changes even when they’re met with resistance. Reflecting on her experience launching a "mini middle school" program to better prepare fifth graders for the transition to secondary school, she walks through how careful listening, collaboration, and persistence led to real impact. Despite initial pushback from colleagues concerned about scheduling, grading, and logistics, Megan prioritized student needs and helped her team reimagine what was possible. Her key takeaway is a call to action for educators to “keep making changes, even if everyone can find a reason not to.”

Professional positions cited were the ones held at the time of recording. The positions and schools of those quoted may have since changed.

Megan Geshel is the Principal at the American School of El Salvador.

You are very brave and motivated. It is a universal thing to say no to changes, wspecially those teachers who have a public board examination for their students at the end of the year. It is lovely program that you have implemented. I would like to know more about it.want to try it it on our PYP 5th graders , next year. Thank you Ms.Megan!
