At The American International School of Lagos, Nigeria, Grade 3 students engaged in an interdisciplinary unit blending visual arts and environmental science, aligned with the National Core Arts Standards. After a field trip to an organic hydroponic garden, students created en plein air sketches and eco-themed photography.
Prepared through lessons on framing, focus, lighting, unique perspectives, and microphotography, students developed technical skills and artistic expression. Using the Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB) approach, they chose their favorite photographs as inspiration to create original paintings focused on nature and sustainability. Students selected between watercolor and acrylic, applying learned techniques to reflect their personal eco-conscious vision.
This integrated unit nurtured creative autonomy, environmental awareness, and visual storytelling, showcasing a successful STEAM-art fusion that empowers globally minded learners.

A Portrait of Global Perspectives
Building blocks, playdough, crayons, and stickers – as soon as a child develops motor skills, we ask them to communicate through art.
Art provides a unique insight into student voice, allowing us to reflect on the human condition by seeing the world through the lens of the student. Art asks both the creator and the viewer to be vulnerable and open to empathy, new experiences, ideas, and viewpoints. It encourages analytical, as well as creative thinking, and inspires conversations about the world around us, our perceptions, reflections, change, and beauty.
By showcasing student artwork from around the world, we have the opportunity to connect our international school community through a portrait of global perspectives. We invite students of all ages and experiences to participate in this visual network by sharing their voice through art.
