TIE: Who We Are, What We Do, Why We Do It

WHO WE ARE

For close to 40 years, The International Educator (TIE), as a non-profit organization, has served the international community with school news and recruiting services to support teachers and schools. Under the umbrella of The Overseas School Assistance Corporation (OSAC) and along with our sister organization the Principals’ Training Center (PTC), TIE is committed to advancing the profession of education.

TIE was founded in 1986 by Forrest Broman, a renowned international educator. His vision was to create a resource and platform to help schools find the best teachers for their students and to celebrate the achievements of our community. And with that, The International Educator was born.

Many of us remember TIE from the newspaper that arrived in our mailboxes and staff rooms, featuring stories about our wide community and announcements of job openings at various schools. Before the internet was a household and handheld resource, TIE brought information from around the world into our schools.

Aware of the need for increased accessibility and a broader reach, in the 1990s, TIE adapted and launched an online recruiting portal that changed the way teachers and schools connected. This innovation allowed educators and institutions to find each other directly and provided an effective alternative to job fairs and intermediary organizations. It provided cost-effective solutions and streamlined the process of finding teaching positions and staff.

Today, TIE continues to innovate to meet the changing needs of educators and schools, enabling them to stay connected and elevate the profession of teaching.

WHAT WE DO

TIE has two sides to the company: the free digital newsletter, and recruitment tools and services.

The Newsletter:

In an effort to adopt more sustainable practices and reach a wider audience, TIE switched from a paid newspaper to a free digital newsletter in 2020. Currently, the TIE newsletter has more than 10,000 subscribers and continues to grow each month, with its content frequently shared across social media sites.

The newsletter provides a platform that brings together the diverse voices, experiences, and knowledge of the international school community. Contributors are all international educators committed to a solution-oriented approach to sharing their perspectives and working towards the advancement of education and student learning in an environment where individuals can find a sense of belonging.

Recruitment Tools and Services:

How can we seek to put the best teachers in front of students? At TIE, we realize the answer must go beyond the two page resume. That is why we have created a dynamic portfolio portal that allows users to show the work they do with students and align this work to the International Standards of Practice. These standards were spearheaded by the PTC and TIE, with input and professional research from the Academy for International School Heads (AISH), James Stronge, and the Association of International Educators and Leaders of Color (AIELOC).

The advantage for candidates is that they have the ability to demonstrate their knowledge and skills beyond a list of their work experiences.

The advantage for schools using our services is that when they are looking through resumes and setting up interviews, they have more information and evidence regarding the experience and abilities of prospective candidates.

WHY WE DO IT

The world of international education is rapidly evolving. TIE is committed to being at the forefront of this change. By addressing emerging trends, advocating for and sharing best practices, and supporting innovative solutions, we aim to drive positive change within the field. In everything we do, our goal is to elevate the profession of international education, celebrate the successes of our community, and make a lasting impact on the lives of students and educators worldwide.

It is an honor and a privilege to serve this community and we look forward to our continued role in international education.
