Student from KIS International School Reaches Shortlisted Finalist Stage in International Schools Essay Competition

The Trust for Sustainable Living (TSL), based in the United Kingdom, is pleased to announce that Akepipat Nimitsawan from KIS International School, Thailand, is one of the shortlisted finalists in the Primary age (7-11 years) category in the TSL 2016 International Schools Essay Competition. In order to reach the final judging shortlist, the students’ essays have been through several rounds of judging and as a result each has achieved an overall score that placed them in the top 3.5% of all essays entered during the competition. While many artists and science-fiction film-makers have shown us images of what cities may look like in 2050, few have considered the importance of sustainability in their development. The reality is that there are limited real-life examples of sustainable cities to date. This year’s essay competition therefore asked students to think about the future of cities and their effects on the planet, by posing the question ‘Are Sustainable Cities Possible?’ “I look forward to welcoming a great many of the shortlisted finalists and other finalists in the competition at our forthcoming International Schools Debate on Sustainable Cities which takes place in April 2016 in Dubai, including a tour of Masdar City, the world’s first attempt at building a zero-carbon city.” Liam O’Sullivan, Grade 5 Teacher at KIS, said: “We are very proud of Akepipat's essay and effort in this most important debate. Living in Bangkok Thailand, the issues surrounding sustainable cities are particularly cogent. His interest and thoughtfulness are important as the youth of today will be charged with the responsibility of making sustainable cities a reality in the near future.” The Overall Grand Prize winner, 1st Prize Winners per category and 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th placed winners in each category will receive their trophies and medals at the International Schools Debate and Awards Ceremony in Dubai in April 2016.
