ISKL Marks its Golden Jubilee in Grand Style

The International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) celebrated its 50th Anniversary this past spring with a series of special events.
An Alumni Reception kicked off the festivities in April and was attended by over 250 guests from among our alum, parents, seven previous Heads of School, faculty, and staff, as well as current colleagues. Wonderful stories were shared about events that took place years ago and about the relationships that were built. Alumni traveled from all over the world to attend our events, some from Australia, others from Saudi Arabia and Dubai, and still others from New Zealand, the US, and Europe. At an Alumni Assembly several previous Heads of School and educators shared their recollections about the school during various stages of its evolution.
Friday, 10 April was Malaysian Stall Night. Malaysia has played host to ISKL for fifty years and part of its rich culture has intricately woven itself into the school’s internationalism. It was a wonderful event for families, as our students treated us to amazing musical performances from the Elementary School, Middle School, and High School. After a feast featuring Malaysian food, the evening culminated in a long fireworks show, whose finale briefly lit the sky with the words “ISKL 50.”
The following day, a Gala Dinner was held with the theme “Let’s Celebrate in Style.” With over 800 involved, both in the audience and backstage, the evening commenced with a pre-dinner cocktail and a thunderous drum performance by the students. Dinner kicked off with the national anthem by the ISKL Singers and a welcoming speech from the Head of School, Dr. Norma Hudson. This was followed by the launch of a commemorative book titled 50, officiated by Youth & Sports Minister YB Khairy Jamaluddin, Deputy Education Minister II YB P. Kamalanathan, ISKL Board Chair Saif Malik, and Dr. Norma Hudson.
Former heads of school Robert B. Gaw (1970–1978) and Dick Krajczar (1989–1996) then came on stage to regale those present with anecdotes of their years in ISKL. A fashion show followed in which parents and faculty members wowed the audience by modeling collections from top Malaysian designers. The night ended with much dancing and mingling.
These wonderful celebrations were a fitting tribute to all that ISKL has accomplished over the past half-century and testify to the power of a community working together with a common focus and goal. ISKL is a very special place!
