Awty International Chess Team Named National Champions

The Awty International School Chess Team is the 2015 National High School Champion.
Over three days on April 10-12, ten Awty students competed in seven matches each, some lasting up to four hours at the national championship tournament in Columbus, Ohio. It was a close competition, but the team did very well, resulting in a clear first place victory in their division.
The USCF is the official, not-for-profit U.S. membership organization for chess players and chess supporters of all ages and strengths, from beginners to Grandmasters. Founded in 1939 with the merger of the American Chess Federation and the National Chess Federation to promote the, USCF has grown to over 80,000 members and 2,000+ affiliated chess clubs today.
The Awty students who participated in the tournament included Stephen Wells (8th grade) - 9th place, Arjun Saran (11th grade) - 22nd place (tie), Yian Wong (8th grade*) - 22nd place (tie), Devon Merz (11th grade) - 57th place, Matt Mallon (12th grade), Burhan Qureshi (12th grade), Adam Ali (11th grade), Maxim Gurevich (11th grade), Olivier Kuhn de Chizelle (11th grade), and Jacob Berg (8th grade).?
The support of Mr. Sam Waugh, Head of Upper School, and Mr. Tom Beuscher, Head of Middle School, as well as the time and effort Mr. Anton Truong, Chair of the Science Department, spent coaching the team coupled with the hard work of the players, has been instrumental in winning Awty’s very first national competition. ?Congratulations to the team and their faculty sponsor, Mr. Lucas Anderson, on this inaugural national championship for Awty!
