Legendary French Rap Group iAM and Awty Students Discuss and Debate Lyrics

Currently on tour in the United States, the legendary French rap group iAM made a stop in Houston in late April. Prior to their show at the House of Blues, iAM visited with Upper School students at The Awty International School to discuss the themes behind their music.
iAM, one of the first rap groups out of France, emerged from the Paris suburbs and started making their mark upon the French music scene in the late 80s. iAM’s debut album, “De la planète Mars,” released in 1991, proved to be one of the greatest success stories of the emerging French rap scene, selling over 100,000 copies. It also produced three major hit singles.
Awty students have been analyzing the lyrics to iAM’s hit song “Nés sous la même étoile” (or “Born Under the Same Star”). During iAM’s visit, students had the chance to discuss and debate the meaning behind the lyrics with the rap artists. The song suggests that one’s destiny is dependent on the life one is born into. The complete lyrics in both French and English can be found here.
The Awty International School is a coeducational, college preparatory day school enrolling over 1500 students who represent nearly 60 different nations in Pre-School through 12th grade. Through its challenging curriculum, strong extra-curricular programs, and insistence on fluency in at least two languages, Awty promotes an understanding and respect for all cultures and emphasizes local and global community service.
