Energy Team Teaches Solar Arrays to Sullivans Students

Yokosuka Navy Base, Japan - Members of Commander Fleet Activities, Yokosuka (CFAY) Base Energy Team visited the Sullivans School recently and shared their knowledge of Yokosuka Naval Base’s solar arrays.
Lieutenant Commander Arce Doble, Public Works Production Officer and Lieutenant Ji Frederiksen, Assistant Public Works Officer taught students from Grades 3, 4, and 5 at the school about a solar array that has been installed at the school.
The 30-minute science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) instructional classes took place in a unique location; on the roof of the school where the arrays were installed.
Mr. Doble commented, “We were really surprised by the smart, intuitive questions asked by the students. They were prepared by their teachers and were very knowledgeable about energy in general and solar power in particular.”
Ms. Fredriksen stated, “The children were very engaged and interactive in their learning.”
The solar arrays installed on the roof of The Sullivans School can provide 1.5 percent of the base’s energy needs when operating at capacity.
