Growth & Appraisal FAQs

What is the Growth & Appraisal Tool (GAT)?

GAT is an evidence-based, teacher-led system that redefines professional growth and appraisal in international schools. Built on the Standards of Practice for International School Educators, it empowers educators to lead their own development while providing leaders with a streamlined way to manage and support growth.

What educator roles are supported in GAT?

GAT includes standards for all international school roles, including:

  • Teachers
  • Teacher Leaders
  • School Counselors
  • Principals and Assistant Principals
  • School System Roles
  • School Heads
How does GAT support educator growth?

GAT focuses on continuous improvement by allowing educators to:

  • Set professional goals
  • Reflect meaningfully on practice
  • Upload artifacts like lesson plans, student work, and videos
  • Engage in dialogue with school leaders

The emphasis is on authentic growth, not checklist evaluations.

How do we get started with GAT?

We recommend these approaches:

  1. Start with Leadership Teams
Use GAT with department heads, coaches, or coordinators to model the process.

  2. Pilot with Volunteers
Choose a group of engaged staff to explore and share the tool with others.

  3. Launch with a Standards Walkthrough
Introduce the Standards of Practice in a collaborative workshop.

  4. Start with a Focus Standard
Align the initial rollout with one or two school-wide goals.

What makes GAT different from traditional evaluation systems?

GAT shifts appraisal from compliance to collaboration. Teachers own their growth journey, and leaders act as partners. It removes rigid rubrics and replaces them with meaningful, standards-based reflection.

Does GAT reduce leader workload?

Yes. Instead of spending time on one-time observations and lengthy write-ups, leaders review teacher-submitted evidence and engage in focused conversations.

Is technical support available?

Yes. Schools receive set-up support, how-to guides, and continued assistance throughout the year.
