The American School in Japan (ASIJ) is striving to live up to its mission, and to do what it can to help those affected by the earthquake and tsunami. The devastation in the north of Japan has called on us to dedicate ourselves to the country we are so fortunate to live in.
While we mourn the 30,000 lives lost, there are also over 200,000 displaced persons; the people of Tohoku continue to need our help and compassion. Our alumni quickly spearheaded fundraising efforts around the world, and have already given over US$1.5 million to the relief efforts.
Marcus and Andrew Ogawa challenged the community to donate to the Red Cross, and offered to match any gifts up to US$500,000. ASIJ has also launched a Japan Relief Fund to support its direct relief efforts.
On the ground, alumni have acted as translators and reporters to facilitate relief efforts and help report on the situation. Many more have helped to locate family members, particularly on behalf of other alumni with relatives in the stricken area.
In the weeks following 11 March, ASIJ partnered with Tama Church and Second Harvest Japan to deliver emergency aid directly to the affected region. Members of the ASIJ community have donated supplies, and are also volunteering their time to deliver them. Several faculty members have spent time working in the Sendai area, assisting with the clean-up operation and helping to provide hot meals at an evacuation center.
