Picking Up the Pieces after Chile’s Earthquake

Those of us who experienced the earthquake, registered as 8.8 on the Richter scale, that hit Chile in February of this year will never forget what it felt like to be awakened by almost three minutes of tumultuous shaking at 3:38 am. Slowly we grew accustomed to the hundreds of aftershocks that continued to rumble up from beneath after the earthquake, one of the most powerful in recorded history. Despite the fact that this earthquake was so massive, that the earth’s axis actually moved by eight centimeters and days shortened by 1.26 microseconds, we were very fortunate in that our school, International School Nido de Aguilas in Santiago, suffered mostly superficial damage.
