In Guangzhou, Local Partnerships Take Root

The American International School of Guangzhou (AISG), China’s Crossroads Club is serious about the trash-to-treasure principle.
Replaced by the School’s new laptops, 80 older computers were gathering dust in a room, until the Club took initiative. After reformatting and repacking them, Crossroads sent them to a vocational school desperately in need of new technology in a Tibetan Area of Qing Hai Province. They are now helping impoverished adults in Tibet to learn computer skills and shore up their employment prospects.
Elsewhere in AISG and as part of a second community partnership initiative, AISG’s Director and Chinese language Coordinator met with a Chinese Professor who serves as Dean of Sun Yat-Sen University’s Chinese as a Second Language Program, to finalize an initial internship agreement between the two institutions.
For the first two to three weeks, interns observe Chinese language classes as well as other classes. In addition to observing instruction, each intern has the opportunity to assist their mentor teacher by being involved in small group activities, such as reinforcing speaking Mandarin. During the last few weeks of the program, each intern conducted a whole class in Mandarin instruction.
Representatives from the University and AISG will meet to evaluate the results, and to discuss continuing the internship program.
