Five DoDEA Students Named Among 2018 National Merit Semifinalists

Five Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) students were named among 2018 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists this year by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has identified approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 63rd Annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically-talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships, which are worth more than $32 million and will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition.

The five DoDEA National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists are:

Ramstein HS (Germany)

• Justin B. Parvizi

• David S. Worthington

Sigonella HS (Italy)

• Junajoy V Frianeza, now a student at Kinnick HS in Japan.

Quantico HS (Virginia)

• Patrick Kelley

Fort Knox HS (Kentucky)

• William Hall

About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and about half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.

Established in 1955, NMSC is a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance, specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Scholarships are underwritten by NMSC with its own funds along with approximately 420 business organizations and higher education institutions that share NMSC’s goal to encourage the pursuit of academic excellence.
