International School Yangon Expands Its Rich Tradition

The International School Yangon (ISY) celebrated its 60th anniversary back in 2015 and is proud today to have impacted the lives of thousands of students over the years.
As the only not-for-profit international school in Yangon, Myanmar, ISY provides an American-based curriculum along with an International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) for its student body, ranging from pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12.
As part of its strategic goal to develop and implement plans to ensure quality, purpose-built facilities that support the curriculum, co-curriculum, security, safety, and health needs of ISY students, the school has recently undergone a campus expansion and facilities renovation.
ISY is proud to announce the completion of the first phase of the expansion process, which added a 145,000 square foot, purpose-built Science, Arts, and Sports Building to the existing campus. The complex provides a wide variety of spaces for activities, programs, and services, including social and academic events for students, meeting and event facilities for the entire ISY community, student organization and work spaces, a gymnasium, an aquatics center, a weight room, a health clinic, a dedicated art gallery, and state-of-the-art science labs.
While the facility adds a new, modern dimension to the long tradition of excellence that the school has provided for more than half a century, ISY remains unique in a beautiful country filled with a rich, warm culture. The ISY campus community resembles a microcosm of what the country of Myanmar is currently experiencing—rapid growth and progress, while at the same time honoring and preserving the history that defines this golden land.
In 2016, with the initiation of a capital campaign, Building the Foundation for Our Future, ISY constituents supported the completion of the Science, Arts, and Sports Building. To date, the capital campaign has received US$1,000,000 from generous donors in the ISY community. A Donor Acknowledgment Wall stands at the entrance of the new building to show gratitude for the various levels of giving, which include naming rights, gold, silver, bronze, Chinthe, and Community Circle categories. On 18 March 2017, ISY hosted a Red Carpet Gala to highlight and thank our donors, opening its doors to other honored guests from the community to celebrate the grand opening of our expansion.
While ISY began with one room and fewer than 10 students over 60 years ago, our campus now boasts six buildings, over 70 academic classrooms, an art gallery, instrumental and vocal music rooms, three computer labs, a library, a competitive swimming pool, two regulation-size basketball courts, a weight room, and a football pitch for over 700 students representing over 40 nationalities. Most impressively, the school still maintains the special sentiment of being one big family and its commitment to excellence is upheld by the phenomenal faculty, parent, and student community. In a country where Buddhist pagodas can be seen from every vantage with mythical Chinthes guarding their gates, the ISY Chinthes, past and present, espouse the meaning of “Once a Chinthe, Always a Chinthe.” The International School Yangon prides itself in “Remembering yesterday, Embracing today, and Inspiring tomorrow.”
