What is Purple Cake Day?
Purple Cake Day is a charity event that supports children to get the education they need to break the poverty cycle and create a better future for themselves, their families, and their communities. Purple Cake Day is March 8th and is a day for kids to help kids. Through school fundraisers and activities and celebrations, children connect with one another around the world, to help other children in need while learning about their role in the global community, and according to PCD, “growing their sense of compassion, respect and leadership.”
Origins of Purple Cake Day
Purple Cake Day was inspired out of tragedy and hope. Its founder, Emily Sanson-Rejouis’ family was living in Port-au-Prince when the 2010 earthquake struck Haiti. On that horrific day, Sanson-Rejouis’ life was to change forever – she lost her husband, Emmanuel, a UN employee, and two of her three daughters, five year-old, Kofie-Jade and three year-old Zenzie. She was blessed with one miracle -- her youngest child, one year-old baby girl, Alyahna was rescued after 22 hours under the rubble.
How Did Purple Cake Get its Name?
Sanson-Rejouis got the name and inspiration for PCD from her two beautiful girls. The oldest, five-year old Kofie from an early age reached out to children living on the street, and always wanted to share her things with them. Her middle daughter, Zenzie, was getting ready to celebrate her fourth birthday, and when asked a week before the quake what she wanted for her birthday, her answer was simple: “I want a purple cake, two purple cakes!” Zenzie did not live to celebrate her birthday, but her spirit, and that of her sister’s, lives on in Purple Cake Day’s mission along with the organization’s tireless actions of empowering children to help children in need, through celebration, education and fundraising.
Why is TIE Supporting Purple Cake Day?
TIE has every reason to support Purple Cake Day. PCD has been an early and generous sponsor of the Children of Haiti Project, a school that TIE, along with other members of the international school community, founded in response to the 2010 earthquake tragedy. Not only has Purple Cake Day made two generous donations to the COHP School in Port-au-Prince, but they have pledged to continue to support the school along with two other worthy schools dedicated to educating disadvantaged children in Kenya and Nepal.
TIE is a proud supporter of Purple Cake Day and we urge you to explore ways for your school, your students, and your children to support this very worthy organization. Please visit: www.purplecakeday.org
