SCIS Rings In UN Peace Day

The music sounded and students paraded in, representing a multitude of nations andoften bearing more than one flag around their neck... And so began the United Nations’ International Day of Peace Celebration at Shanghai Community International School’s (SCIS) Pudong Campus this past September.
The United Nations’ International Day of Peace was established in 1982 to promote peace and diversity around the world, and the SCIS community recognized the importance of celebrating this day to honor its multicultural student body, made up as it is of over 50 different nationalities. Like SCIS, international schools throughout the world have the unique and lofty responsibility of educating global citizens. These citizens come from diverse backgrounds, and often have direct ties to many different places. For this reason, it is even more important that overseas schools create meaningful learning experiences to promote peace and diversity.
Following the parade the celebration continued, as grade levels gave presentations to the SCIS community on how the United Nations’ goals can become a reality: students sang songs, showcased “peace movies,” proudly displayed their cultural backgrounds, and recognized the responsibility of their generation.
The event concluded with an International Food Fair, which was a huge success. SCIS looks forward to this annual celebration, as well as to continuing the education of globally minded students.
