ACS Students Run for Syrian Refugees

Students of Beirut’s American Community School run to raise awareness and collect donations in their 2nd annual Fitness Food Drive (photo: ACS). ___________________________________________________________________ Lower School students at The American Community School–Beirut (ACS) participated in the 2nd annual fitness food drive, which combines fitness and community service. The event celebrates “Healthy Heart Month,” during which students develop their fitness and learn about the importance of healthy hearts. Students in Early Years and 1st and 2nd grade participated in the “Pump it Up” workout with food cans, which included a fitness warm-up walk, a strength-building can-lifting workout, the cha-cha slide dance, and concluded with a cool-down walk around the beautiful track at the American University–Beirut (AUB). All food cans were donated to the Al Layan Syrian refugee camp, which ACS helps to support through community service. ACS 3rd, 4th and 5th graders participated in a “walk-run-a-thon” to raise money for the Syrian refugee camp and school. They persuaded sponsors to pledge 1,000 LBP for each lap they completed within 30 minutes, and many of them ran for the event’s entire duration. Over US$7,000 was raised to provide support for the refugee camp school. The ES student council organized a food drive, gathering over 1,200 cans. In addition, they collected countless bags of dried goods, which were divided and distributed to families in the Al Layan refugee camp.
