How to Apply
The Ed. D. in Educational Policy, Planning and Administration
will be earned through courses, field experience, a comprehensive examination,
and a dissertation. Several of the courses are specifically tailored to
the needs and interests of educational leaders in American overseas and
international schools throughout the world. The special features of this
program include:
Total credits required will be determined through a review of the
applicant's academic record. The course work requirements will range from
48 to 68 credits depending on the graduate work.
Course credits will be earned in the following ways:
An option exists to conduct field studies during the school year and
present results, through independent study with a faculty member.
The International Schools Training Institute has conducted summer institute programs through the Principals' Training Center of International School Leadership since 1989. Over 1,000 international school administrators have completed the PTC's one-week seminars in Rome, London, Miami and Geneva.
ISTI has worked with Boston University to plan a program tailored to the needs of international school administrators, enabling them to earn an advanced graduate degree including the Ed. D., with courses specifically designed to deal with the unique aspects of directing an international school. At least five courses will be required by Boston University taught by experienced ISTI faculty, covering such subjects as:
international school staffing - recruitment, deployment, development and evaluation
successful school head/board relations
law and policy issues in international schools
leadership and crisis management (case studies)
communications and community relations in a multi-cultural environment
curriculum development in the international school
school organization and development
financial management
educational leadership practices
ISTI's faculty of experienced international school directors will include:
Dr. Gail Schoppert (American School of Warsaw), Dr. Niall C. W. Nelson (Jakarta
International School), Dr. William Gerritz (International School of Curacao),
and Dr. Forrest A. Broman (Escuela Campo Alegre - Caracas).
The first cohort of approximately 30 doctoral students are completing the second year of their progam during July 1997. A second Cohort is being created to begin studies at Boston University in July of 1998. Candidates must have completed Masters degree or equivalent, and be serving in a leadership position at an international school.
Applicants will generally be expected to supply evidence of:
undergraduate and master's degree indicating strong academic capability;
satisfactory results on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or Millers Analogies Test (MAT); and
distinguished record as an educator.

2. Unless past results are available for the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or Graduate Record Exam (GRE), arrange to take either one as soon as possible.
3. Submit with the completed application form: official transcripts from undergraduate and graduate work (or equivalent for non-US applicants), and GRE scores or Miller Analogies scores.
4. Include a cover letter and resume which sets forth your educational and administrative experience.
